Homily on Thurs. 26th wk OT Luke 10 1 12
Today, Jesus speaks to us of his apostolic mission.
-Though “Jesus appointed seventy-two other disciples
whom he sent ahead” (Lk 10:1),
the Gospel's proclamation is a task
that cannot be delegated to a few “specialists.”
We have all been called and we all need to feel responsible.
-Each one from his own place and condition.
-The day of our Baptism we were told:
“You are Priest, Prophet and King and you will receive eternal life.”
-Today, more than ever before,
our world needs the testimony of the Christ's followers.
-We must remember that when we speak the Word of God,
It alone has power!
-We don’t have to have some apologetic skills to explain the Word.
-The Gospel alone can transform and convict someone to believe just by sharing it to someone.
"The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few” (Lk 10:2):
-this positive interpretation of the mission is interesting.
-The text does not say there is a lot to sow and a few workers.
-Maybe today, we might have to speak like that, in view of the great ignorance of our society about Jesus Christ and his Church.
-A hopeful glance at the mission may engender optimism and illusion.
Let us not be discouraged by pessimism or despair.
To start with, the mission waiting for us is, at the same time,
exciting and difficult.
When sharing the Gospel to others in our life,
Pope St John Paul II reminds us that the ideas are to be “proposed not imposed.”
“Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals” (Lk 10:4):
-As disciples, our only missionary's strength must be Christ.
-And, so that Christ may fill our life with peace and hope,
We as evangelizers must free ourselves of whatever is not Christ.
-As missionary disciples, we must announce the peace that comes from within!
-He is a bearer of peace because Christ, is the “Prince of Peace”.
-This is why, “into whatever house you enter,
first say, Peace to this household.'
If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him;
but if not, it will return to you” (Lk 10:5-6).
-Our world, our families, our personal ego, all need the Peace that only Christ gives.
-This is why our mission is so urgent and exciting.
Job today, does not get a good answer to his suffering.
-Until Christ comes for what he was born to do!
-Die for us on the Cross, conquer sin and death so we can have eternal life!
-We are bearers of this Good News!
-The world needs to hear it!
-We need to hear it!
-Sin and suffering God took on himself and transformed it for our redemption!
-Destroying death by Rising from the Dead!
-The Resurrection!
-God allows sin and suffering in the world for the opportunity for good to come out of it.
-Like Christ on the cross.
-AND That’s the Power of the Gospel!
-The world around us can be dangerous and hostile. And it is.
-But we, as disciples of Christ, come with a peace deep within us.
-From the Prince of Peace.
-A peace the world cannot give.
-People will be attracted to that peace and want what we have.
-So prepare to share Christ to others.
-Prepare to share with someone where your peace comes from.
-Let’s stay firmly grounded in our mission to love and to share the mercy and truth of God in our world, no matter the consequences.
-Doing so will bring with it countless interior blessings of grace and will enable God to use us as an instrument of His grace
in ways beyond that which we can ever conceive.
In the name of the Father…….
